Kinofilmes was founded in 1996 by Brazilian film producer, writer, and director Theresa Jessouroun. It has since then been committed to the production of short, medium and feature length documentaries related mostly to social concerns. These films have won important awards in national and international festivals, in addition to fulfilling important social roles in the public discussion of such issues as abortion rights, deaf people social inclusion, the care of homeless children, Alzheimer's disease, the persistence of hunger in Brazil and police violence in Rio de Janeiro.

Kinofilmes also produces cinema showcases (like The Eroticism in Brazilian Cinema, presented by Caixa Economica Culture Center), institutional and instructional films, and documentaries shot in Brazil by foreign crews for the BBC, ARTE TV, HBO, National Geographic, Channel 4, France 5 and France 0.
